The Evolution of Dentistry

Believe it or not, dental floss as we know it hasn’t always existed-and neither have toothbrushes for that matter! As your trusted dental partner, we thought we’d take a trip back in time to show you how dentistry has evolved over the years.

Toothpaste

Today, we have a variety of flavours to choose from, but things weren’t always so minty fresh. The ancient Egyptians used a mixture of ground pumice stone and vinegar to clean their teeth. They also made early versions of toothpaste by mixing honey and crushed eggshells. And toothpicks? They were made of various materials, including bones, sticks, and quills.

Toothbrush

The invention of the toothbrush in the late 1700s was a significant breakthrough in dental care. Some of the first were made of hog bristles attached to a bone or bamboo handle. The modern-day toothbrush was not invented until 1938, when nylon bristles were introduced.

X-rays and Implants

In the early 1900s, the first X-ray machine was introduced, allowing dentists to see inside the mouth and diagnose dental problems more accurately. In the 1960s, the first dental implant was successfully placed. This breakthrough led to the development of many other dental procedures and treatments.
