- Why Limiting Acidic Foods Is Beneficial for Your Teeth
While adopting scrupulous oral hygiene habits such as brushing and flossing can help keep your pearly whites healthy, another important thing you can do is to limit acidic foods and drinks. That’s because eating and drinking acidic items can erode tooth enamel, which leads to a variety of dental problems.
Acidic foods and drinks are those that have a pH level below 7, such as tomatoes, citrus fruits, coffee, tea, soda, vinegar-based dressings, sports and energy drinks. All these items contain acid that can weaken tooth enamel over time.
-
What Are The Effects?
The acid in these items breaks down the minerals in your tooth enamel that protect it from decay and cavities. This breakdown causes the enamel to become weak or thin over time and can lead to sensitivity when eating or drinking hot or cold items.
It also leaves your teeth more vulnerable to staining from other foods like coloured berries or sodas. If left unchecked, the erosion caused by acid can create pits in the enamel which makes them easier for bacteria to get into causing cavities or gum disease.

How to Protect Your Pearly Whites
The best way to shield your teeth from acidic foods and drinks is by limiting their consumption as much as possible. If you do consume them, make sure you rinse with water afterwards or brush your teeth if possible.
Adding cheese or milk with meals containing acidic items can also help neutralise some of the acidity in the mouth which will reduce its effects on tooth enamel.
Finally, if you choose to indulge in sugary treats like candy or cake, try brushing afterwards as sugar is another culprit when it comes to dental health issues such as cavities!
